Artemis is the daughter of Zeus, god of the sky and Leto, goddess of motherhood. Artemis is the goddess of many things including, hunt, forests, the moon, young girls, child birth and virginity. She is well known for being a feminist and proving that women can be just as powerful as men. She carries bow and arrows and protects small children and animals. The deer is her most sacred animal.
From the moment she was born, she was helping her mother, Leto, give birth to her twin brother, Apollo. Leto was in labour with Apollo for nine days before finally delivering him. Not long after this birth, a giant by the name of Tityus attempted to rape Artemis and Apollo's mother. Leto called for her children and they killed the giant in a shower of arrows.
When Artemis was just three years old, Zeus said he'd give her anything she asked. Artemis said:
1. To be able to live life chaste
2. To be able to be a lifelong bachelorette and never marry
3. A bow and arrow like that of Apollo's
4. Hunting dogs to assist her hunting
5. Stags to lead her chariot
6. And eighty virgin nymphs to be her hunting companions
Because Artemis had the right to eternal virginity, she strongly defended it. She killed more than one attacker who was trying to rape her, or any of her hunting companions. This shows she's strong, loyal and she defends those who deserve it. Young Athenian girls were sent to the sanctuary of Artemis for one year to learn survival skills and self defence. The Gods trusted Artemis, her skills and wits, so why shouldn't you?
